In honor of the 211th anniversary of its founding, President Sergio Mattarella of the Republic received the Commanding General of the Arma dei Carabinieri and a delegation from the Arma. In his speech, President Mattarella remarked that (courtesy translation): «Being known as the “Benemerita” is both an honor and a responsibility. Since 1814, the Arma dei Carabinieri has embodied this mission, dating back to the establishment of the Carabinieri Corps. Initially, the Corps was composed of soldiers “of good conduct and distinguished service,” charged with “contributing to the defense of the State in times of war and safeguarding public and private security.
[…] For 211 years, the force has upheld this mission. In its broad structure, the station commanders, numbering 113 at the time, embody a model inspired by their widespread presence in our territory. Station Commanders are figures who, in addition to their high level of professionalism, absorb the anxieties and concerns of our fellow citizens, which are not always directly related to criminal phenomena. Thus, they create a valuable network of prevention and social cohesion.
[…] The War Flag of the Weapon is awarded an additional Gold Medal for Civil Valor. It is with great pleasure that I have signed the decree of conferment to recognize, in this case, the extraordinary dedication shown by the Carabinieri in protecting the rights of children and adolescents. The Carabinieri’s dedication in combating forms of mistreatment, exploitation, bullying, and violence against children is a commendable contribution to the national community.
[…] The rule of law constitutes a foundational principle in democratic societies, whereby the governance of the state is anchored in the principles of justice and legal transparency. In this context, the promotion of a culture of legality, cultivated in educational institutions through initiatives spearheaded by the Arma, assumes paramount importance in countering the prevailing pitfalls of pack logic in the digital realm, particularly in the context of drug-related deception.
[…] The Arma is called to important operational efforts, which are also impressive in size and nature. These efforts include the fight against common crime, infiltrations in the economic system and institutions, and the terrorist threat, which sees a demanding prevention work. The Arma also participates in peace missions of an international nature. The Carabinieri play an instrumental role in safeguarding the nation. They serve as a reliable reference point for numerous international interlocutors».
