How to register a death

Registration of Death Certificates Issued Abroad for Italian Citizens

To register the death of an Italian citizen that occurred outside Italian territory, the following documents must be submitted:

Request for Registration of Death

Death Certificate

  • Issued by the Vital Statistics Office of the country/state where the death occurred.
  • Must include the full name, place and date of birth, and place and date of death of the deceased Italian citizen.

Apostille of the Death Certificate

  • Issued by the competent authority to authenticate the document for use in Italy.

Translation into Italian of the Death Certificate

  • The translation must be complete and accurate.
  • It can be done by the applicant (if proficient in Italian) or by a qualified translator. A list of official translators is available for reference.

Proof of Italian Citizenship of the Deceased

A copy of one of the following documents:

  • Italian Identity Card
  • Italian Passport
  • Certificate of Italian Citizenship

Photocopy of Identification Documents

  • A copy of a valid ID or passport of both the requester and the deceased.

If the certificate is a document other than A4, and/or printed on both side, and/or with glued attachments, please provide a copy of each side on a single face sheet.
