International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026: An Evening of Reflection. Keynote Speaker Prof. Gino Segrè

4000-2250-max

On Tuesday, January 27, the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Miami commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and renew their commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust, promoting historical reflection. On this occasion, a lecture and a conversation will be held at the Italian Institute, in collaboration with the American Jewish Committee Miami and Broward.

The event, scheduled at 6:30 p.m., aims to emphasize the importance of memory as the foundation of democratic and civil values. The keynote speaker is Gino Segrè, celebrated Italian American physicist, who will present his book The Golden Age of Italian Jews: 1848–1938 (Paul Dry Books, 2025).

With this work, Segrè explores the historical role of the Italian Jewish community between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries, a community that left a significant mark on Italian society, “eager to prove that the faith the country had shown in their Italianità (Italianess) was fully warranted”. As evidence of this, Segrè recounts numerous stories of women and men who distinguished themselves through their professionalism, civic engagement, and love for Italy, fighting in World War I and later opposing fascism, often facing serious personal sacrifices.

The history of Italian Judaism thus becomes a lesson in determination and resilience, patriotism and courage, but also a warning against indifference and oblivion.

Nephew of physicist Emilio Segrè, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1959, Gino Segrè (Florence, 1938) is himself Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Pennsylvania. Author of several books on the history of science, he won the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award for Faust in Copenhagen.

The evening continues with a debate featuring Regina Behar, Holocaust survivor; Judith Osers Muller (Yad Vashem USA Foundation); Danielle Parade-Levi (Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach) and Rabbi Julie Jacobs (Center for Jewish Life at Beth David).
