On the occasion of Labor Day, today, May 1, the Consulate General joins the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as all Italian Embassies and Consulates around the world, in honoring those who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession and in extending our warmest greetings to all workers.

As the President of the Italian Republic recalled yesterday during His visit to the Piaggio plant in Pontedera, “May 1 is the holiday of workers across the world. It is a celebration of the Republic, which is founded on labor. […] Work shapes who we are and the future before us. It helps us put down roots, and makes us authors, protagonists, and responsible custodians of the society we will pass on to our children and grandchildren. Needs and questions define the character of societies. The creation of wealth and its distribution sustain quality of life, the well‑being of the community, and give substance to the values that inspire our coexistence and our culture, marking the social sustainability of our way of life. Work plays a central role in fulfilling the goals of social solidarity set out in the Constitution. […] Work is a pillar of society. It is an expression of personal and collective freedom. It is dignity. It is a means of participation and of building together. The goal of full and decent employment is among the aims of our democracy. It is the message of the Constituent Assembly, which wished the Republic—soon to celebrate its eightieth anniversary—to be ‘founded on labor’ so as to give democracy, freedom, and equality—finally achieved—a deeper and more demanding meaning.
