{"id":9483,"date":"2026-07-16T10:32:54","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T14:32:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/?p=9483"},"modified":"2026-07-16T10:35:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T14:35:55","slug":"termination-of-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-from-august-3-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dal_consolato\/2026\/07\/termination-of-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-from-august-3-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Termination of validity of paper identity cards for travel abroad from August 3, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"187\">As of <strong data-start=\"6\" data-end=\"23\">3 August 2026<\/strong>, the paper version of the Italian identity card will no longer be valid for travel abroad, regardless of the expiration date indicated on the back of the document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"265\"><strong data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"227\">Decree-Law No. 108 of 26 June 2026<\/strong> introduced several important changes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"813\">\n<li data-section-id=\"wcyr2a\" data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"462\">An unexpired paper identity card may continue to be used as proof of identity in dealings with the Italian Public Administration and with public service providers, including Italian Consulates.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1kc42hr\" data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"813\">In urgent cases, Italian municipalities may issue a temporary identity document valid for travel abroad. The document is non-renewable and may be valid for no more than six months. As it may not be accepted by certain foreign countries, travelers are advised to verify the entry requirements of their destination on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/home\"><strong data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"805\">Viaggiare Sicuri<\/strong> <\/a>portal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"1006\">Please contact your nearest Italian Consulate for information on how to apply for the new <strong data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"939\">Electronic Identity Card (CIE)<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"940\" data-end=\"943\" \/><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"1006\">https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1116\">Dedicated appointments will be available for individuals who do not hold any other valid identity documents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1394\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">As of <strong data-start=\"1124\" data-end=\"1139\">1 June 2026<\/strong>, Italian citizens residing abroad and registered with AIRE may also apply for a CIE at any Italian municipality, pursuant to <strong data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1298\">Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026<\/strong>.
