{"id":5560,"date":"2023-09-29T11:18:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T15:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/?page_id=5560"},"modified":"2025-10-02T11:53:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T15:53:16","slug":"repatriation-of-human-remains-and-cremated-remains","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/altri-servizi\/albo-consolare\/repatriation-of-human-remains-and-cremated-remains\/","title":{"rendered":"Repatriation of human remains and cremated remains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Italian Consular and Diplomatic offices provide assistance in the repatriation of human remains or cremated remains of Italian citizens who have passed away abroad by issuing the\u00a0<em>Mortuary Passport<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Mortuary Passport<\/em>\u00a0is a certificate by which the Consular Office certifies that all the procedures required by Italian law have been fulfilled, thus allowing the remains to enter and be interred in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The Consulate can issue the\u00a0<em>Mortuary Passport<\/em>\u00a0only after having obtained prior\u00a0<em>Clearance (Nulla Osta)<\/em>\u00a0from the Italian Municipality where the remains will be interred. The Consulate itself will request this clearance from the Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>The possibility of keeping an urn in a place other than a cemetery (e.g. a private residence) and\/or of scattering ashes is regulated by the Municipality. Families are therefore strongly advised to contact the relevant Municipality before requesting the repatriation of ashes.<\/p>\n<p>In order for the Consulate to request the clearance from the Municipality, the family of the deceased (preferably the next of kin) or the funeral home appointed by the family must first send the documents listed in the section\u00a0<em>\u201cDocuments to be submitted\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to the following email address:\u00a0<strong>assistenza.miami@esteri.it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Documents to be submitted to the Consulate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In case of repatriation of CREMATED REMAINS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Request for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/registration-of-the-death-certificate.pdf\">registration of the death certificate<\/a>\u00a0(richiesta trascrizione dell\u2019atto di morte), signed by the next of kin of the deceased;<\/li>\n<li>Request for the repatriation of ashes signed by the next of kin of the deceased, together with a copy of the applicant\u2019s photo ID;<\/li>\n<li>Extended death certificate (<em>long form<\/em>, including cause of death), legalized with\u00a0<em>Apostille<\/em>. For married women, the maiden name must be legible;<\/li>\n<li>Full translation of the death certificate into Italian (translation does\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0require Apostille);<\/li>\n<li>Document proving the Italian citizenship of the deceased (passport, birth certificate, etc.);<\/li>\n<li>Cremation certificate. The signature on the certificate must be notarized by a Notary Public;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AFFIDAVIT-FORM-BY-DIRECTOR-OF-THE-FUNERAL-HOME-FOR-REPATRIATION-OF-HUMAN-CREMATED-REMAINS.docx\">Affidavit\u00a0<\/a>drafted by the director of the funeral home on company letterhead. The signature must be notarized by a Notary Public.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once the Consulate has verified the accuracy and completeness of the documents sent by email, the airline ticket may be purchased (please allow approximately 3 weeks for the issuance of the Municipality clearance and the Mortuary Passport). Flight details must be sent by email to the Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, all the above-listed documents, along with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DATA-SHEET-FOR-REPATRIATION-OF-HUMAN.docx\">Data sheet<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Money Order corresponding to the service fee (art. 66H of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Estratto-tabella-consolare-IV-trimestre-2025.pdf\">Consular Fee Table<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>Original passport of the deceased (if still valid) for its invalidation;<\/li>\n<li>Prepaid, self-addressed return envelope (to be used for sending back the Mortuary Passport);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>must be sent in original to the following address:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consulate General of Italy<\/strong><br \/>\n4000 Ponce de Leon Blvd, Suite 590<br \/>\nCoral Gables, FL 33146<br \/>\nAttn: Assistance Office<\/p>\n<p><strong>In case of repatriation of HUMAN REMAINS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Request for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/registration-of-the-death-certificate.pdf\">registration of the death certificate<\/a>\u00a0(richiesta trascrizione dell\u2019atto di morte), signed by the next of kin of the deceased;<\/li>\n<li>Request for the repatriation of the body signed by the next of kin of the deceased, together with a copy of the applicant\u2019s photo ID;<\/li>\n<li>Extended death certificate (<em>long form<\/em>, including cause of death), legalized with Apostill<em>e<\/em>.
