{"id":4907,"date":"2025-07-15T11:21:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T15:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/?page_id=4907"},"modified":"2025-07-15T11:23:51","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T15:23:51","slug":"reacquisition-of-italian-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/foreign-citizen-services\/1470-2\/reacquisition-of-italian-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Reacquisition of Italian Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"276\" data-end=\"358\"><strong>PROCEDURE 1 \u2013 REACQUISITION BY DECLARATION UNDER ARTICLE 17 OF LAW NO. 91\/1992<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"360\" data-end=\"762\"><strong data-start=\"360\" data-end=\"390\">Law No. 74 of May 23, 2025<\/strong>, has reopened the terms for the reacquisition of Italian citizenship in favor of <strong data-start=\"472\" data-end=\"513\">former Italian citizens born in Italy<\/strong> or who have <strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"581\">resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years<\/strong> and who lost Italian citizenship <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"647\">on or before August 15, 1992<\/strong>, in accordance with <strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"695\">Article 8, Nos. 1 and 2<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"737\">Article 12 of Law No. 555 of 1912<\/strong>, in the following cases:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"764\" data-end=\"1140\">\n<li data-start=\"764\" data-end=\"852\">\n<p data-start=\"766\" data-end=\"852\">Those who <strong data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"822\">voluntarily acquired a foreign citizenship<\/strong> on or before August 15, 1992;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"853\" data-end=\"995\">\n<p data-start=\"855\" data-end=\"995\">Those who <strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"898\">renounced Italian citizenship<\/strong> following <strong data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"936\">involuntary acquisition<\/strong> of a foreign citizenship and established residence abroad;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1140\">\n<p data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1140\">Those who were <strong data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1052\">minor children living with a parent<\/strong> who lost Italian citizenship and shared the same residence with the parent at the time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1454\">Former citizens falling within the above categories may <strong data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1223\">reacquire citizenship<\/strong> by making a <strong data-start=\"1236\" data-end=\"1260\">personal declaration<\/strong> at the <strong data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1298\">Consulate General of Italy<\/strong> between <strong data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1323\">July 1, 2025<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1350\">December 31, 2027<\/strong>. In this case, <strong data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1417\">transferring residence to Italy is not required<\/strong>\u2014the declaration alone is sufficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1456\" data-end=\"1690\">This reacquisition option <strong data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1500\">does not apply<\/strong> to those who <strong data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1590\">renounced or lost citizenship for any reason on or after August 16, 1992<\/strong>. These individuals must follow <strong data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1637\">Procedure 2<\/strong> under <strong data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1677\">Article 13 of Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong> (see below).<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1692\" data-end=\"1730\"><strong>Appointment and Required Documents<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"1924\">Declarations of reacquisition may be submitted <strong data-start=\"1779\" data-end=\"1802\">by appointment only<\/strong>, requested via email to: <strong data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1865\"><a class=\"cursor-pointer\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1863\">cittadinanza.miami@esteri.it<\/a><\/strong><br data-start=\"1865\" data-end=\"1868\" \/>Subject line: \u201c<strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1923\">Reacquisition of Italian Citizenship<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1926\" data-end=\"2067\">Applicants must attach the following <strong data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"1973\">copies<\/strong> to the appointment request email and present the <strong data-start=\"2023\" data-end=\"2036\">originals<\/strong> on the day of the appointment:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"3460\">\n<li data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2144\">\n<p data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2144\">Passport issued by the authorities of the country of current citizenship;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2145\" data-end=\"2187\">\n<p data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2187\">Expired Italian passport (if available);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2678\">\n<p data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2214\"><strong data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2211\">Birth certificate<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2678\">\n<li data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2384\">\n<p data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2384\">For those born in Italy: an <em data-start=\"2247\" data-end=\"2294\">\u201cestratto per riassunto dell\u2019atto di nascita\u201d<\/em> (birth certificate extract) issued by the Italian municipality of birth with annotations;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2387\" data-end=\"2678\">\n<p data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2678\">For those born abroad: certificate formatted for transcription in Italy, i.e., legalized\/apostilled and translated. Certificates issued outside the U.S. must be translated and certified according to the requirements published on the website of the competent Italian Embassy or Consulate;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2679\" data-end=\"2754\">\n<p data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2754\"><strong data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2729\">Historical certificate of residence in Italy<\/strong> (for those born abroad);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2807\">\n<p data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2807\"><strong data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2806\">Historical certificate of Italian citizenship<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"3325\">\n<p data-start=\"2810\" data-end=\"2882\">Documentation demonstrating <strong data-start=\"2838\" data-end=\"2879\">cause and date of loss of citizenship<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"3325\">\n<li data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"2987\">\n<p data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"2987\">Proof of foreign citizenship acquisition and, where applicable, renunciation of Italian citizenship;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2990\" data-end=\"3142\">\n<p data-start=\"2992\" data-end=\"3142\">Naturalization certificate or, if required by local procedures, a birth certificate accompanied by a citizenship statement and title of acquisition;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3145\" data-end=\"3233\">\n<p data-start=\"3147\" data-end=\"3233\">Documents issued by foreign authorities must be <strong data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3232\">properly legalized and translated<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3236\" data-end=\"3325\">\n<p data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3325\">U.S. naturalized citizens must submit their original <strong data-start=\"3291\" data-end=\"3324\">Certificate of Naturalization<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3326\" data-end=\"3460\">\n<p data-start=\"3328\" data-end=\"3460\"><strong data-start=\"3328\" data-end=\"3350\">Proof of residence<\/strong> in the consular jurisdiction: a copy of the most recent tax return or a utility bill in the applicant\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3462\" data-end=\"3756\">The jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Italy in Miami includes: <strong data-start=\"3535\" data-end=\"3756\">Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, Saba, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Turks &amp; Caicos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3758\" data-end=\"3850\">For applicants who lost Italian citizenship as minors, the following must also be submitted:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3851\" data-end=\"3938\">\n<li data-start=\"3851\" data-end=\"3887\">\n<p data-start=\"3853\" data-end=\"3887\">The applicant\u2019s birth certificate;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3888\" data-end=\"3938\">\n<p data-start=\"3890\" data-end=\"3938\">The Italian parent\u2019s naturalization certificate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3945\" data-end=\"3985\">Fee for Declaration of Reacquisition<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3987\" data-end=\"4089\">A <strong data-start=\"3989\" data-end=\"4010\">\u20ac250 contribution<\/strong> is required, payable at the consular office <strong data-start=\"4055\" data-end=\"4088\">on the day of the appointment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4313\">\n<li data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4191\">\n<p data-start=\"4093\" data-end=\"4191\">Payment must be made <strong data-start=\"4114\" data-end=\"4140\">in cash or money order<\/strong> (USD amount based on the current exchange rate).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4192\" data-end=\"4313\">\n<p data-start=\"4194\" data-end=\"4313\">Refer to the fee schedule at the following<a href=\"https:\/\/consmiami.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Estratto-tabella-consolare-III-trimestre-2025.pdf\"> link<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4315\" data-end=\"4529\">Once the declaration is made, the <strong data-start=\"4349\" data-end=\"4371\">Citizenship Office<\/strong> will verify legal eligibility, finalize the recognition process, and forward the file to the relevant Italian municipality along with the signed declaration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4531\" data-end=\"4713\"><strong data-start=\"4531\" data-end=\"4577\">According to Article 15 of Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong>, reacquisition of citizenship <strong data-start=\"4608\" data-end=\"4657\">does not take effect retroactively from birth<\/strong>, but rather <strong data-start=\"4670\" data-end=\"4712\">from the day following the declaration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4531\" data-end=\"4713\">\n<p data-start=\"4531\" data-end=\"4713\">\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"4720\" data-end=\"4813\"><strong>PROCEDURE 2 \u2013 REACQUISITION THROUGH RESIDENCY IN ITALY UNDER ARTICLE 13 OF LAW NO. 91\/199<\/strong>2<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4815\" data-end=\"5145\">Individuals who lost Italian citizenship <strong data-start=\"4856\" data-end=\"4881\">after August 16, 1992<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"4886\" data-end=\"4920\">do not qualify for Procedure 1<\/strong>, may reacquire it by <strong data-start=\"4942\" data-end=\"4971\">declaring their intention<\/strong> at the Consulate General, stating their commitment to establish <strong data-start=\"5036\" data-end=\"5074\">residency in Italy within one year<\/strong> from the date of the declaration, in a municipality of their choosing.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5147\" data-end=\"5185\"><strong>Appointment and Required Documents<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5187\" data-end=\"5436\">Appointments must be requested by writing to: <strong data-start=\"5238\" data-end=\"5270\"><a class=\"cursor-pointer\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"5240\" data-end=\"5268\">cittadinanza.miami@esteri.it<\/a><\/strong><br data-start=\"5270\" data-end=\"5273\" \/>Subject line: \u201c<strong data-start=\"5288\" data-end=\"5328\">Reacquisition of Italian Citizenship<\/strong>\u201d<br data-start=\"5329\" data-end=\"5332\" \/>Attach scanned <strong data-start=\"5347\" data-end=\"5357\">copies<\/strong> of the following, and present the <strong data-start=\"5392\" data-end=\"5405\">originals<\/strong> on the day of the appointment:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5438\" data-end=\"6038\">\n<li data-start=\"5438\" data-end=\"5513\">\n<p data-start=\"5440\" data-end=\"5513\">Passport issued by the authorities of the country of current citizenship;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5514\" data-end=\"5556\">\n<p data-start=\"5516\" data-end=\"5556\">Expired Italian passport (if available);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5557\" data-end=\"5668\">\n<p data-start=\"5559\" data-end=\"5668\">Italian <strong data-start=\"5567\" data-end=\"5588\">birth certificate<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"5590\" data-end=\"5614\">estratto per riassunto<\/em>) in original form issued by the Italian municipality;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5669\" data-end=\"5846\">\n<p data-start=\"5671\" data-end=\"5734\">Documentation proving the cause and date of citizenship loss:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5737\" data-end=\"5846\">\n<li data-start=\"5737\" data-end=\"5846\">\n<p data-start=\"5739\" data-end=\"5846\">U.S. naturalized citizens must provide their original <strong data-start=\"5793\" data-end=\"5826\">Certificate of Naturalization<\/strong> (plus a photocopy);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5847\" data-end=\"6038\">\n<p data-start=\"5849\" data-end=\"6038\"><strong data-start=\"5849\" data-end=\"5871\">Proof of residence<\/strong> in the consular jurisdiction: most recent tax return or a utility bill in the
