PROCEDURE 1 – REACQUISITION BY DECLARATION UNDER ARTICLE 17 OF LAW NO. 91/1992
Law No. 74 of May 23, 2025, has reopened the terms for the reacquisition of Italian citizenship in favor of former Italian citizens born in Italy or who have resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years and who lost Italian citizenship on or before August 15, 1992, in accordance with Article 8, Nos. 1 and 2, or Article 12 of Law No. 555 of 1912, in the following cases:
-
Those who voluntarily acquired a foreign citizenship on or before August 15, 1992;
-
Those who renounced Italian citizenship following involuntary acquisition of a foreign citizenship and established residence abroad;
-
Those who were minor children living with a parent who lost Italian citizenship and shared the same residence with the parent at the time.
Former citizens falling within the above categories may reacquire citizenship by making a personal declaration at the Consulate General of Italy between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027. In this case, transferring residence to Italy is not required—the declaration alone is sufficient.
This reacquisition option does not apply to those who renounced or lost citizenship for any reason on or after August 16, 1992. These individuals must follow Procedure 2 under Article 13 of Law No. 91/1992 (see below).
