DIGITALIZATION OF VISA PROCEDURES: EUROPEAN COMMISSION QUESTIONNAIRE

The EU is considering the digitalization of the two phases of the visa application, that is: presentation of visa application and supporting documentation, and the issuance of the visa sticker). The European Commission Communication on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum has set the goal of making the visa procedure fully digitalized by 2025, both through the possibility of submitting visa applications on an online portal, as well as the dematerialization of the visa itself, to be issued in digital format.

To achieve this, the European Commission and the EU-LISA agency are studying a prototype unified European portal for visa applications and, at the same time, it is planning the development of an electronic Schengen visa pilot project.

In order to improve and evaluate the implementation of the preliminary phase of this initiative, the Commission recently launched a public consultation in the form of a questionnaire aimed at visa applicants, representatives of the transport industry and other users potentially interested. The consultation will end on June 3, 2021.
