CITIZENSHIP THROUGH MARRIAGE: MANDATORY REQUIREMENT OF ITALIAN LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE

The language requirement affects all the applications submitted on-line on and after December 4, 2018. Failure to comply with it will
result in the rejection of the application.

On December 1, 2018 has been approved the new Art. 9.1 of the Law no. 91/1992 concerning the procedures for the Italian citizenship acquisition.

The Art. 9.1 establishes the mandatory requirement of an adequate knowledge of the Italian language, at least B1 level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), in order to acquire the Italian citizenship under Art. 5 or Art. 9 of the said Law no. 91/1992, respectively acquisition through marriage or granted by a President’s Decree.

Therefore at the application submission among other documentation must be provided to the Consulate:

or a degree released by an Italian Public School or by a private Italian School recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education;

or a certification released by one of the following Italian Institutions:

· Universita’ per stranieri di Siena

· Universita’ per stranieri di Perugia

· Universita’ Roma Tre

· Societa’ Dante Alighieri

· Istituti Italiani di Cultura.
