Registration of marriage certificate

Registration of marriage certificate

SECTION C – MARRIAGE, PLEASE CHECK OUR GENERAL INFO PAGE

Registration of marriage certificates issued abroad (out of Italian territory) of an Italian citizen, or between Italian citizens.

If there are previous marriages and divorces they have to be mandatory already registered or have to be registered at the same time.

The act of marriage celebrated abroad will be registered in the Marriage Records Registry of the last municipality of residence in Italy or the municipality where you are registered in (AIRE).

List of documents to supply in order to register marriages in Italy:

1. Request of registration of marriage form:

2. Act of marriage, issued by the competent Vital Statistics Office of the State/Country where the event took place, that shows names and date of birth of both groom and bride and also information about previous marriages (it is very important to check that the certificates do not present mistakes in these data; please find below the address of the Public Authorities that issue these certificates). It should be a “long form”. If the marriage certificate issued in that State/Country does not contain this information, a “Marriage Licence” should be added (with Apostille and translation into Italian). In most of U.S. this paper is called “MARRIAGE RECORD”. If marriage has been celebrated in Florida the act it will show 4 sections: Application, License, Certificate and the last section (sometimes cut or obscured) concerning information about previous marriages, that should be legible;

3. Translation into Italian of the marriage certificate. It can be prepared by the applicant, if competent in Italian, or by a qualified translator (please find the list of official translators) but it has to be typewritten. The whole certificate has to be translated: from the first to the last row, summaries and/or conversions are not admitted. This Consulate will check and certify it, if correct, declaring the conformity to the original in Italian;

4. Apostille to the act of marriage.

5. Document that prove Italian citizenship (Italian identity card, Italian passport, certificate of Italian citizenship);

6. Photocopy of ID (identity card or passport) of groom and bride.

If the certificate is a document other than A4, and/or printed on both side, and/or with glued attachments, please provide a copy of each side on a single face sheet.

IN ORDER TO FACILITATE OUR FELLOW CITIZENS THE APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLY BY POSTAL SERVICE. THE CONSULATE WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES OR LOSSES OF SHIPPED DOCUMENTS.
