Registration of birth certificate

SECTION B - BIRTHS. PLEASE CHECK OUR GENERAL INFO PAGE

Registration of birth certificates issued abroad for the son/daughter of Italian parent/s

The children of at least an Italian parent, even if born abroad (out of Italian territory) and, eventually, holding other citizenships, are Italian citizens. Their birth, therefore, has to be registered in the Vital Records Registers of the last Comune of residence (or the Comune of A.I.R.E. registration) in Italy of one of the parents.

List of documents to supply in order to register births in Italy:

1. Request of registration of birth form

2. Act of Birth, issued by the competent Vital Statistics Office of the country where this event took place, that shows names and date of birth of the parents (it is very important to check that the certificates do not present mistakes in these data; please find below the address of the Public Authorities that issue these certificates). The paper to supply is called “Certification of Live Birth”, the most complete act of birth issued in almost all the States and countries of this consular jurisdiction;

3. Translation into Italian of the act of birth. It can be prepared by the applicant, if able, or by a qualified translator (please find the list of known translators) but it has to be typewritten. The whole certificate has to be translated: from the first to the last row, summaries and/or conversions are not admitted. This Consulate will check and certify it, if correct, declaring the conformity to the original in Italian;

4. Apostille to the act of birth.

5. Papers that proof Italian citizenship (Italian identity card, Italian passport, certificate of Italian citizenship);

6. Photocopy of ID (identity card or passport) of both parents.

If the certificate is a document other than A4, and/or printed on both side, and/or with glued attachments, please provide a copy of each side on a single face sheet.

N.B.: IF YOUR CHILD IS BORN OUT OF A WEDLOCK, PLEASE PROVIDE A BIRTH CERTIFICATE WITH PATERNITY ACKNOWLEDGMENT.

IN ORDER TO FACILITATE OUR FELLOW CITIZENS THE APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLY BY POSTAL SERVICE. THE CONSULATE WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES OR LOSSES OF SHIPPED DOCUMENTS.
