SECTION A: VITAL STATISTICS, GENERAL INFORMATION

We process requests based on arrival order and cannot estimate the time needed for registration.

If you want to know about the registration of the requested record, please contact your comune first.

BEFORE REQUESTING ANY REGISTRATION PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR OWN BIRTH CERTIFICATE HAS BEEN REGISTERED TO YOUR COMUNE, AS THIS PROVES YOUR CITIZENSHIP.

The Italian citizens residing abroad, must communicate to his/her Italian consulate all Vital Statistics events happened in that territory in order to register them in Italy.

If you are temporary and not AIRE registered, this Consulate can only send in Italy certificates issued in this consular jurisdiction.

If you are AIRE registered with this consulate, you can request the registration of acts issued in another jurisdiction. In this case, please check with the website of the consulate competent for the area in which the event happened.

CERTIFICATES ISSUED IN COUNTRIES/STATES NOT UNDER JURISDICTION

These documents can be given here for the registration in Italy, if you are our AIRE registerd and only if the original consulate has certified the translation, through the apposition of a stamp at the end of translation. Check with that consulate the requirements.

CERTIFIED COPY – ORIGINALS – ORIGINAL COPIES.

We only accept original or certified copies or original copies.

When we request certified copy, it has to be certified NOT BY A NOTARY, but it has to be an copy issued by the institution who has the original. In this case the apostille will be issued on the signature of the clerk who certified the copy.

APOSTILLE

The Apostille represents the legalization of a foreign certificate and it is recognized internationally by all the countries which are signatories to Hague Apostille Convention of 1961 (pls find below the addresses of the Authorities that issue the Apostille).

FEES

The transmissions of your documents to your Comune are free of charges.

LEGALIZATION OF TRANSLATION FOR DOCUMENTS TO BE PRESENTED TO OTHER CONSULATES OR DIRECTLY TO THE COMUNE.

In case you need to present documents issued in this jurisdiction to other Italian consulates or directly to your comune, please prepare the documents as explained in our website, and send them along your request, the related money order and a prepaid and preaddressed envelope, for the return. The fee is indicated in the table.

SECTION B – BIRTHS

Registration of birth certificates issued abroad for the minor child of Italian parent/s

The children of at least one Italian parent, even if born out of Italy and/or holding other citizenship, are Italian citizens AFTER the registration of their birth in the parent city. If both parents are Italian, their children must be registered in the mother city.

The marriage between the parents MUST be registered first.

List of documents to register births in Italy:

1 – Request of registration 

2 – Certificate of Birth, issued by the competent Vital Statistics Office of the country/state where this event took place,

The document must be the most complete you can find (long form, or certificate of live birth) and must include place and date of birth of parents, aside the city in which the child is born.

3 – Typewritten translation into Italian of the act of birth.

It can be done by the applicant, if able, or by a qualified translator: The whole certificate has to be translated: from the first to the last row, summaries and/or conversions are not admitted.

3a If the certificate is from another jurisdiction and you are our AIRE member, follow instruction from the consulate related to the city of the event AND get a certification of translation from that consulate IF the language is other than English.

4 – Apostille of the certificate.

5 – Copies of Italian identity card, Italian passport, certificate of Italian citizenship); and the ID of the other parent.

 

If the certificate is a document other than A4, and/or printed on both side, and/or with glued attachments, please provide a copy of each side on a single face sheet.

N.B. : IF YOUR CHILD IS BORN OUT OF A WEDLOCK, PLEASE PROVIDE A BIRTH CERTIFICATE THAT INCLUDES THE PATERNITY AKNOWLEDGMENT.

 

 

SECTION C – MARRIAGE and CIVIL UNION (same sex marriage)

Registration of marriage certificates issued out of Italy of an Italian citizen, or between Italian citizens.

If there are previous marriages and divorces, they must be registered

List of documents to register marriages in Italy:

1 – Request form for registration of marriage  or civile union

2 – Certificate of marriage, issued by the competent Vital Statistics Office of the State/Country where the event took place, that shows names and date of birth of both groom and bride and also information about previous marriages.

It should be a “long form” / with statistics included. If the marriage certificate does not contain this information, a “Marriage Licence” should be added (with Apostille and translation into Italian). In most of U.S. this paper is called “MARRIAGE RECORD”. In same sates the certificate it will show 4 sections: Application, License, Certificate and the last section (sometimes cut or obscured) concerning information about previous marriages, that must be visible;

3 – Typewritten translation into Italian of the certificate

4 – Apostille of the marriage certificate.

5 – Copies of Italian identity card, Italian passport, certificate of Italian citizenship); and the ID of the other parent.

SECTION D –  REGISTRATION OF DIVORCE

List of documents to be presented.

1 – Request of transcription of the Judgment of divorce: Form (it is very important to fill in the form with the correct data of the ex-spouse);

2 – Affidavit containing some important declarations: Form;

3 – Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage.DO NOT ADD AGREEMENTS O

4 – Apostille of the Final Judgment of Divorce.

5 –  Translation into Italian of the Final Judgment Marital Settlement Agreement.

We suggest to look for a qualified translator because of the juridical language used in the judgments. The whole document has to be translated: from the first to the last row.

6 – Certificate of No Appeal to the mentioned Judgment or, if not issued by the competent Court, a Certificate/Report of Dissolution of Marriage issued by the Vital Statistics Office;

7 – Apostille to the Certificate of No Appeal (or to the Report of Dissolution of Marriage);

8 – Translation into Italian of the Certificate of No Appeal (or to the Report of Dissolution of Marriage);

9 – Photocopy of your Italian passport;

SECTION E – DEATHS

Registration of death certificates issued abroad (out of Italian territory) of an Italian citizen.

List of documents to present in order to register deaths in Italy:

1 – Request of registration of death form:

2 – Certificate of death, issued by the Vital Statistics Office of the State/Country where the event took place, that shows name, place and date of birth, place and date of death of the Italian citizen. 3 – Apostille of the certificate of death.

4 – Translation into Italian of the certificate of death. It can be prepared by the applicant, if competent in Italian, or by a qualified translator (please find the list of official translators).

5 – Document that proof the Italian citizenship of the deceased (Italian identity card, Italian passport, certificate of Italian citizenship);

6 -Photocopy of ID (identity card or passport) of the requester and the deceased.
